In 1971, KU student Amy Sue Hurst suggested the idea of having a small Jayhawk follow the University mascot around. When told KU did not have the money for another costume, she made one herself and then donated it to the University, which in turn invited her to wear it at sporting events. "Baby Jay" was "hatched" at halftime of KU's Homecoming victory over K-State on October 9, 1971, and has since served as a second mascot. The original costume is on display on level one of the Kansas Union.
